A. The Worldwide Tradition.
1. "Shaman" is a Siberian (Tungusic) word, but today it is used to describe similar beliefs and practices around the world. "Kupua" is the Hawaiian equivalent.
2. A mystic, magician, poet, naturalist, psychologist, psychic, "technician of the sacred."
3. One who works with the powers of mind and the forces of nature for the benefit of society.
B. The Shaman as Healer, Dreamer and Seer.
1. As a healer, the skilled shaman is guided by effectiveness, not method. Seeks to change mind more than body, and will use any system that works.
2. As a dreamer, the skilled shaman works with alternate realities and states of consciousness, uses dreams, visions and imagination to get information and change reality.
3. As a seer, the skilled shaman practices an extensive range of extrasensory abilities far beyond those of an ordinary psychic.
4. The Warrior Way emphasizes danger and strength, growth through impeccability, self-discipline for its own sake, competition and control, and the practice of survival/fighting skills. (most Amerindian and others)
5. The Adventurer Way emphasizes beauty and love, growth through flexibility, goal-oriented self-discipline, communication and cooperation, and the practice of survival/exploring skills. (Hawaiian, Hopi, Pygmy)
C. The Village Shaman works in a rural setting and the Urban Shaman works in an urban or suburban setting to create harmony with the mind, the body and the environment; favorable weather; peaceful relationships; and abundant resources.
D. The seven principles, their gestures and talents are:
- 1. Ike - Be Aware that there are many ways to think about anything - The Kuhi.
a) The talent is Seeing.
- 2. Kala - Be Free to change your mind about anything - The Kuhi.
a) The talent is Clearing.
- 3. Makia - Be Focused on what you really want - The Kuhi.
a) The talent is Focusing.
- 4. Manawa - Be Here in the powerful present - The Kuhi.
a) The talent is Presence.
- 5. Aloha - Be Happy with the good that is - The Kuhi.
a) The talent is Blessing.
- 6. Mana - Be Confident of your strength - The Kuhi.
a) The talent is Empowering.
- 7. Pono - Be True to your ideals - The Kuhi.
a) The talent is Dreamweaving (Expect The Best).
